Program descriptions

Anthropology is in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Anthropology offers students two undergraduate majors. One - Anthropology - leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree, and the other -Anthropological Sciences - leads to the Bachelor of Science degree.

Requirements for the ANTHROPOLOGY major (40 hours) leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree.

I. Pre-requisites
You must complete the following courses:

  1. ANT 200 – Introduction to Physical Anthropology
  2. ANT 201 – World Prehistory: An Anthropological Perspective
  3. ANT 202 – Peoples and Cultures: An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

II. Core Courses (15 hours)
You must complete the following courses in three areas with a grade of C- or better:

  1. Physical Anthropology
    ANT 300 – Human Origins OR ANT 301 – Modern Human Physical Variation
  2. Archaeology
    ANT 401 – Fundamentals of Archaeology
  3. Cultural Anthropology
    ANT 525 – History of Anthropological Theory

III. Electives (at least 25 hours)
You must complete 25 hours of electives (normally 5 courses) including at least one course in each of the three sub-disciplines (physical anthropology, archaeology and cultural anthropology).

  1. Physical Anthropology elective
  2. Archaeology elective
  3. Cultural Anthropology elective
  4. Free Anthropology elective # 1
  5. Free Anthropologyelective # 2

Requirements for the ANTHROPOLOGICAL SCIENCES major (55 hours) leading to the Bachelor of Science degree.

I. Pre-requisites
You must complete the following courses:

  1. ANT 200 – Introduction to Physical Anthropology
  2. ANT 201 – World Prehistory: An Anthropological Perspective
  3. ANT 202 – Peoples and Cultures: An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

II. Core Courses (20 hours)
You must complete the following courses in three areas with a grade of C- or better:

  1. Physical Anthropology
    1. ANT 300 – Human Origins
    2. ANT 301 – Modern Human Physical Variation
  2. Archaeology
    ANT 401 – Fundamentals of Archaeology
  3. Cultural Anthropology
    ANT 620.01 – Hunters and Gatherers

III. Electives (at least 25 hours)
You must complete 25 hours of electives (normally 5 courses) including at least one course in each of the three sub-disciplines (physical anthropology, archaeology and cultural anthropology).

  1. Physical Anthropology elective
  2. Archaeology elective
  3. Cultural Anthropology elective
  4. Free Anthropology elective # 1
  5. Free Anthropology elective # 2

IV. Additional Requirements (10 hours)
You must complete the following courses:

  1. EEOB 400 – Evolution
  2. STATS 145 – Introduction to the Practice of Statistics OR STATS 245 – Introduction to Statistical Analysis

Summary of the Requirements for an Anthropology Minor

Note: we do our best to keep this information up-to-date and accurate, but it is ultimately the students responsibility to consult with his or her advisor(s) to ensure compliance with all requirements

A minimum of 25 credit hours (5 courses) are required to minor in anthropology. The student may complete a minor by choosing the archaeology, cultural anthropology, or physical anthropology track. A minor program form must be approved by one of the undergraduate advisors and filed with the graduation application and major program form.

General Information on Minor Programs

  1. Minor programs are not required for graduation
  2. A student may not take a major and a minor in the same subject
  3. Courses used on the minor track may not be used on the major
  4. Where appropriate, overlap between the ER/GEC/LAR and a minor in permissible unless specifically disallowed for an individual minor
  5. All minors require a minimum of 20 credit unique hours; some require more. No more than 10 hours of transfer credit may be applied to any minor
  6. When students complete more than one minor, each minor must contain a minimum of 20 unique hours
  7. No grade below "C-" will be permitted in courses comprising the minor; the minimum overall CPHR of the minor shall be 2.00
  8. Courses taken on a Pass/Non-Pass basis many not be applied to the minor
  9. Some minors need individual approval by a faculty member; others do not. Sheets describing the individual minor carry this information
  10. Students need not file their minor programs until they file their graduation applications
  11. Once a minor is on file in the college/school office, any change must be discussed with the faculty advisor and/or college/school counselor

Anthropology Minor - Archaeology Track
Students must take Anthropology 201 and 401 and at least one course from both the regional studies in prehistory and archaeological method and theory categories. The remaining credit hours may be chosen from all three categories or another subfield (cultural or physical) of anthropology with the faculty advisor's permission.

Anthropology Minor - Cultural Track
Students must take Anthropology 202 and 525 and at least one course from both the regional survey and topical courses in cultural anthropology categories. The remaining credit hours may be chosen from either category or from another subfield (archaeology or physical) of anthropology with the faculty advisor's permission
